Signs of a Gas Leak
- Rotten Egg Smell - natural gas has a harmless chemical called mercaptan added to it so homeowners and professionals can easily identify leaks. If you smell sulfur or rotten eggs, you may have a leak.
- Hissing Sounds - Unexplained hissing or whistling can mean a leak in your gas lines or at connecting points.
- Outdoor Signs - dead vegetation in your yard, bubbles in standing water, or dirt blowing without any other wind can all be signs of an unseen leak.
- Higher Gas Bills - if you have a small or slow leak, it may also show up in sudden increased costs in your gas bills.
What to Do if you Suspect a Gas Leak
If you suspect you have a gas leak, you need to act immediately. Dominion Energy provides the following instructions:
- Leave the Area Immediately
- Warn Others to stay away
- Call Your Gas Provider and 911 once you are at a safe distance - for most of Utah, this is Dominion Energy

Excellent communication and repiping process by Jon and the Keemer Plumbing team. We had a full re-pipe due to Poly B and they were able to complete the full repipe within the timeframe presented. They were very clear about pricing, possible upgrades, critical details and potential issues throughout the process. We had a minor concern (unrelated to the repiping process other than perhaps the entire system was much more efficient than the prior, so we were not used to it) and Patrick, the president of the company, personally came out to verify everything was running correctly, which, to me, says a lot about their commitment to their clients and upholding quality of services.
